¡Bienvenidos! Welcome back to school and welcome to Spanish class. I hope that this will be a productive year for all of us. I plan to fulfill my obligations to you, and in order to do so, I need your help. Students and parents/guardians, please read the following information carefully so that you will have a clear understanding of my expectations, policies, and procedures. In order to do well in Spanish, you must be willing to be an active participant in and out of class.
Course Description:
Spanish II Honors is a continuation of Spanish I with additional emphasis on communication skills and higher level grammar. An average of at least a 93 in Spanish I is recommended for this course. A cultural overview of Spanish speaking regions is included. PREREQUISITES- Spanish I; Teacher recommendation required.

***Out of class, you are expected:
***Grading:
Per AHS Foreign Language Department policy, grades will be calculated using total points. Grades will be updated on Power School regularly, so please utilize this resource to keep up with your/your child’s progress in my class. Since this is an honors class, 3 points will be added to the final average at the end of each quarter (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4), as well as onto the semester exams (taken in December and May), but NOT to the semester averages (S1 and S2). ACS has determined that students in Honors and AP classes should not be awarded extra credit projects/assignments because they already receive the extra points added to the quarter grades and exam grades. However, students may be given bonus questions on tests/quizzes/assignments.
Grade Scale:
A- 93-100
B- 85-92
C- 75-84
D- 70-74
F- 69 and below
***Honors Fee
The Spanish II Honors fee is $5.00, which covers the entry fee for the National Spanish Exam. All Spanish II Honors students will order the AMSCO supplementary workbook on their own and instructions and information will be given on this the first week of school.
***National Spanish Exam
All Spanish Honors students are required to take the National Spanish Exam in the spring. The NSE will count as a regular test grade for the 4th quarter. In preparation for the vocabulary portion of the exam, students will take weekly NSE vocabulary quizzes. The vocabulary lists will be distributed in class and/or posted on my website, and need to be studied independently before the quiz each week. Students are encouraged to take practice tests at www.nationalspanishexam.org in order to prepare for the actual test.
***Policies:
1. Please be in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings prepared to start class. This means that you have your pencils sharpened, and all of your required materials out and you are ready to work on the “Actividad” (bell work) that will be at the front of the class each day. We will have a quiz over these “actividades” at the end of each quarter. These “actividades” are not optional, so it is important that you be on task, and keep up with them throughout the quarter.
2. Please do not ask to leave class except for an emergency. All of our class time is valuable, so please get all of your materials, and take care of all personal business before class. You have 6 minutes between classes…use your time wisely!!
3. Please leave all food, drinks (including water), candy, and gum in the cafeteria where they belong. I have students with severe food allergies, so this is very important!
4. Please do not run for the door when the bell rings. I, not the bell, dismiss class.
5. Please raise your hand for permission to speak, ask a question, or leave your seat.
6. Please do not talk while I am talking, put your head down or sleep, or work on other assignments during class…you may miss something important! Any work done for another class during mine will be taken and will NOT be returned!!
7. Homework is due at the first of the period in its entirety. It should be finished before coming to class. Students completing homework at the bell, or as I check it, will not receive full credit. Also, academic honesty is expected on all assignments. Both parties involved in homework, classwork, test, or quiz copying will not receive full credit.
8. Please be respectful of yourself, others, property, and the school. Follow all rules, policies, and guidelines as stated in the Arlington High School and Arlington Community Schools student handbooks. Failure to do so will result in detentions or referrals to administration.
***Procedures:
***After an EXCUSED absence (I MUST RECEIVE A BLUE SLIP!):
1. Please check the white “make-up work” binder that will be located at the front of the classroom. The binder is divided by the 2 levels that I teach, and it will list/describe exactly what was done in class every day. Any handouts or worksheets that you missed will be in your class period’s pocket that is located on the “make-up work” bulletin board. Before or after class, get with someone in your class period to copy any notes that you might have missed.
2. You have the number of days missed to make up homework/classwork assignments. If you check the makeup work binder and bulletin board, you will have all that you need to get the work to me in a timely manner. This is your responsibility…not mine!
3. If you were present the day homework/classwork/tests/quizzes was/were assigned, the homework/classwork/test/quiz is due the day you return. Please show me all make-up work before or after class.
4. Tests and Quizzes must be made up within ONE WEEK of an excused absence. I reserve the right to make make-up tests or quizzes different than the original test or quiz, so I encourage you to be in my class on test/quiz day. Please check the makeup work bulletin board for your “make-up work slip” that will be in your class period’s pocket after each test/quiz missed. It is your responsibility to bring this slip to me to schedule a make-up time that is convenient for both of us. Time permitting, make-up tests and quizzes may be taken during the student’s class time, during Tiger Time on Mondays, or after school on a day that is convenient for both of us.
5. If a project is due on the day you are absent, the project must be turned in the day you return to school.
***After an UNEXCUSED absence (YELLOW SLIP OR NO BLUE SLIP SHOWN TO ME):
1. No tests or quizzes may be made up that were given, and no projects that were due may be turned in.
2. No homework/classwork assignments that were due/assigned on the day of the absence will be accepted.
***If you choose to break a rule:
First time: Warning/Teacher-Student conference
Second time: Parental contact
Third time: Referral to the office

***In class, you are expected:
- to bring the following materials EVERY DAY:
- 3-ring notebook with dividers (example sections: bell work, notes, vocabulary, translations, class work, homework, etc.)
- Paper (college-ruled)
- Pen/pencil (NO PURPLE, RED, OR PINK PLEASE!)
- Composition Notebook for journals
- Spanish/English dictionary (not required, but strongly recommended)
- to listen, work hard, answer questions, and participate to the best of your ability.
- to bring any questions, concerns, or needs to my attention.
***Out of class, you are expected:
- to practice pronunciation.
- to learn vocabulary. Do not wait until the night before the quiz/test! We have a preliminary chapter, 8 units with 2 chapters each, and supplementary vocabulary from the AMSCO workbook and the National Spanish Exam, so that means a lot of vocabulary.
- to complete homework and class work.
- to study regularly. Do not wait until the last minute! Devoting at least 10-15 minutes a night to Spanish should be sufficient and prevent any last minute cramming of the material.
